Our History

The History of the Saratoga Economic Development Corporation spans over 45 years. From the early days of its organization, nearing almost a half-century of progress, the economic development success resulting in substantial private investment, job creation and job retention has earned Saratoga County a regional, national and international reputation. With grateful appreciation for the volunteer leadership and staff that has brought SEDC into the 21st Century, below is a brief trip down "SEDC Memory Lane" that the Board of Directors and Staff hope you will enjoy.

The Building Years

Original Mission Statement
SEDC is a private sector, non-profit, consulting firm, established in 1978, that works to retain existing businesses while creating new jobs in Saratoga County, New York.
Our mission is to create jobs and diversify the tax base while improving the quality of life for the residents of Saratoga County.

 

The Eighties

In the first decade, SEDC helped to create over 5,000 jobs, $60 million in new payroll and attract $600 million in new investment to Saratoga County.

Highlights:

Malta Commons developed.

Ball Corporation locates to Saratoga County and creates 275 jobs.

QUAD Graphics decides to build in the Grande Industrial Park.

NYSEG becomes the first tenant in Halfmoon Industrial Park.

Companies Retained: Westinghouse Electric & Supply Co., Lamilite, Inc., General Electric, Waters of Saratoga Springs, SPB Industries, Clevepak, Artcraft, Monarch Chemical, Prime Vinyl Concepts, North American Carbide of NY, Adirondack Rubber & Supply, De Lima Coffee, Northway Machines, SHA Computer, and Stevens & Thompson.

The Nineties

SEDC helped produce over 8,000 jobs, and $870 million in new investment to Saratoga County.

Highlights:

$2 million invested in the Moreau Industrial Park.

$125 million invested in Indeck.

$50,000 industrial clean-up & study.

Quad Graphics completes 98,000 square foot expansion resulting in $12 million invested, 225 new jobs, and $24 million in payroll.

ACE Hardware invests $35 million and creates 300 new jobs.

Bobrick Washroom comes to Saratoga County, adding $3 million investment and adding 100 new jobs.

Logistics One invests $7 million in their expansion.

Frito Lay invests $2.8 million and creates 50 new jobs

Target Distribution Center invests $80 million and adds 1,000 new jobs.

The 2000s

SEDC played a vital role in securing GlobalFoundries, a chip plant factory that employs over 3,000 and has an economic impact of $3 Billion.

Highlights:

Sysco invests $30 million in Saratoga County and creates 500 new jobs.

Saratoga Technology Energy Park opens.

Cascades expands to Saratoga County creating 140 new jobs.

Creatacor expands investing $2.9 million, retaining 29 jobs, and creates four new ones.

2001 - Optioned Property (2 separate owners)

2002- Started Planning, Engineering and Approval process for Luther Forest Technology Campus

2003 – Draft Environmental Impact Statement Approved Malta/Stillwater

2004 - Generic and Final Traffic Analysis

2004 – Final Environmental Impact Statement Approved Malta/Stillwater

AMD Chooses Luther Forest - “For AMD (GLOBALFOUNDRIES), two key factors set New York apart from the rest:  the state’s clear strategic vision and community preparedness.”

GlobalFoundries breaks ground.

SCA Tissue expands investing $20 million and retaining 386 jobs.

PanAm-Southern Intermodal Rail Yard invests $40 million in Saratoga County.

The 2010s - Present Day

SEDC helped create over 640 jobs and assisted companies with over 150,000 square feet of expansion in Saratoga County. Companies include: Applied Materials, ASML, Custom Courier Solutions, DB Schenker, DNSE, Harrington Industrial Plastics, KLA-Tencor, LAM Research, Mattson, Novellus, Panalpina, Tokyo Electron, Axcelis, and more.

Impact- 640+ jobs - Over 150,000 sq. ft of space in Saratoga County

Highlights:

Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) builds TEC-SMART (now HVCC North) in the Luther Forest Technology Park. This cutting-edge education building gave Saratoga County a major step forward in preparing the future workforce.

Leonard Bus expands, investing $3.54 million and creating 26 jobs.

Panalpina opens in Saratoga County, investing $3.54 million and creating 26 jobs.

Soleno, LLC expands to Grande Industrial Park, investing $22 million and creating at least 50 new jobs.
